Established in 1938, Armor Lux is 1 of the few remaining Breton manufacturers in Brittany today.
27 March 1858
Act Of France introduced the navy + white striped knitted top as the uniform for all French navy seamen.
The top was originally known as mariniere or matelot. The distinctive block pattern of stripes made them easier to spot in the water. The garment usually had a boat neckline.
The original design featured 21 stripes to represent each of Napolean's victories.
After a visit to Brittany, Coco Chanel introduced the Breton top to the fashion world through her nautical collection.
The Breton top was made popular by Brigitte Bardot, Pablo Picasso, Marylyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, James Dean + Jean Seberg.
